New lower prices on all pinball machine stencils One of the most challenging parts of pinball machine restoration is repairing the cabinet artwork. Older games are often in dire need of repainting - a time-consuming and exacting job. These stencils can help give you professional-quality results and save many hours of tracing, taping and cutting. Product Update AlertPinball Pal cabinet stencils are now made from an improved material that is easier to apply and remove, along with other advantages. They make the old vinyl stencils obsolete. The new polyethelene-based stencils are over four times thicker, so they no longer require the clear transfer tape, saving time and eliminating potential complications. Here are some other advantages of the new stencils:
Pinball Pal pioneered the development of computer-cut vinyl stencils for pinball machine cabinet repainting, and with this new improved stencil material we are continuing to provide the best product available. We take the time to create the most accurate and true-to-original patterns, based on original machines in our physical posession (never just from photographs). We are also expanding our selection beyond pinball machines, now including EM arcade games.
Here's a close-up of a typical stencil. Note the label showing the name, position, color and order for the stencil. All stencil sections are labeled this way. See the two rows of rivet shapes at the top and the bottom? Note that each one is slightly different. We have meticulously copied the exact shapes from an original cabinet. These patterns were originally made long before computerized "cut and paste" was available, so we don't take those shortcuts either. This results in a more accurate result with a true vintage appearance. Every stencil set includes stencils for the entire cabinet: top and bottom, sides and front. A typical pinball machine stencil set comprises 10 individual pieces, covering over 50 square feet. A free plastic squeege is included to help smooth out the stencils on the cabinet, and comprehensive printed instructions are included. You can download a PDF file version of the instructions here.
Coin-operated game cabinets were painted with a solid base color, followed with two other colors that were sprayed through thin metal stencils. The original stencils are no longer available, and it is not cost-effective to make metal stencils for a single painting job. Fortunately, there are new materials that can be used to make cabinet stencils. These stencils are cut from sheet mask material made from heavy-gauge polyethelyne. The stencil mask has a special low-tack adhesive so that it can be easily removed from the cabinet after the stencil color has been applied. After the stencil is applied to the cabinet, it is ready to paint. The stencil patterns are cut from computer-generated patterns based on the original cabinet design. Many hours are spent to assure that all of the details of the original cabinet is retained. Even the minor mis-registrations and flukes of the factory patterns are retained in order to perfectly match the original appearance. Complete printed instructions are included with the stencil sets, and the instructions are also available here as an Adobe PDF file. The basic steps are:
